Top Ten Books I Feel Like Everyone Has Read Except Me.

Top Ten Books I Feel Like Everyone Has Read Except Me.

I'm sure that this list could extend way beyond 10. But here's 10 off the top of my head.

It's funny I haven't done a Top Ten Tuesday for some time, some of these books are clearly weighing heavily on my conscience, as many appeared back here too.... I need to take the next step I think. I did buy Anne Frank since last I compiled a list, perhaps it's time to read it. Although I'm planning on saving it for my first visit to Amsterdam (whenever that joyous event occurs).

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. This feature was created because we are particularly fond of lists here at The Broke and the Bookish. We'd love to share our lists with other bookish folks and would LOVE to see your top ten lists!

I'd like to read Captain Correlli's Mandolin too. I'd much rather read the book than see the film!

If you know anything about the geisha or Japan at the turn of the century then you can easily skip reading Memoirs of a Geisha. Everyone who recommended it to, upon reflection, said the same thing: I learned so much. Well, sure, if you don't already know something about these things then you might learn something. But my mother and I both felt that it read like a project for some MFA program. The characters were mostly (if not entirely) two dimensional and the prose uninspired.

I'm planning on rereading the Bible next year. Not sure why and I may change my mind but it's sort of there, simmering in my brain at the moment.

I've read The Diary of a Young Girl more times than I can remember. Loved Lord of the Flies which was one of those books I felt I should have read in high school but hadn't. Also loved The Hunger Games, which genuinely surprised me. I even got a little teary at one scene.

I've always wanted to read The Wind in the Willows but never got around to it and recently added The Elegance of the Hedgehog. To be honest, I have no desire to read The Help but I might be persuaded to do so someday. I could just as easily be persuaded to focus on the pile of books I already have for reading before me. :)

Interesting list. I'm already working on another book list but I have a feeling I may want to come back and think about what my list would include. The only problem is, I strongly suspect my list would most be more like "These are the books everyone else has read but I have never read and probably will never read."

Nope, I haven't read them all ... but I do recommend Captain Corelli's mandolin ... and I thought The slap was a fascinating read. Anne Frank ... well, really, what WERE you doing when you were a teenager!?

Except for Anne Frank, I have not read the others!

Oh, Memoirs of a Geisha and Anne Frank's Diary should have been on my list too!:P I've only read Lord of the Flies and Hunger Games from your list, but I really liked both of them.

High Five! I've only read Memoirs of a Geisha :P

Very unique list. I also haven't read Lord of the Flies, and I really feel like everyone else read it in school. I started Elegance of the Hedgehog and liked it, but got distracted by something else.

Come check out my list at The Scarlet Letter.

I've only read 4 1/2 of those. And I also tried reading Memoirs of a Geisha but gave up on it.

The Elegance of the Hedgehog is one of my favorites. I have a stack of books in line to read. Currently I am reading "The Greater Journey - American's in Paris" by David McCullough. I have not read Captain Corelli's Mandolin but just added it to my list. Amazingly, I have read the others.

I loved Memoirs of a Geisha, it is one of my favorite books.

There's a few there I'd like to read but one of those I *did*, I really disliked.

It may be utterly un-Australian but I loathed 'The Slap' - found it really overdone and just hated it!

The ones I've read didn't make a big impression. Not even Ann Frank, which is a book that everyone should read, but no one wold read for their pleasure. But try and read it before going to Amsterdam, seeing the museum will make much more sense then.
Thank you for stopping by at my blog!

I have only read Anne Frank's book. It is funny that you mention The Elegance of the Hedgehog. At book club on Monday that book came up for a potential book for next year's list.

Trish- it's strange but I have no desire whatsoever to see that film.

Satia-I don't know that I'll ever get around to Geisha. I think there is even a copy lying about the house somewhere. I'm fine with that. I do really want to read some of the others- I'm going to plan on Wind in the Willows next year I think. I've borrowed The Help, but don't have time to get to it at the moment.

Sue- I did have a misspent teenagehood in the 70s. A combination of bad English teacher, and no will, I was reading, but mainly Harold Robbins and Jaqueline Sussan!

Gautami- it's good to know that I'm not the only the one.

Nina- I want to get to Lord of the Flies soon-ish, I feel it's a major failing.

Hannah- that's pretty good going for a young'un

LBC- I do suspect everyone else has read it apart from us. There's even a whole Simpson's episode based on it.

Susan-I think it would probably be the last one I would get to off this list.

Wow Genie! 9/10 that's incredible. I do so want to read Hedgehog. The whole Paris thing of course. I'm hoping to get to The Greater Journey this year. I downloaded a sample onto my ipad kindle. Is it a good read? I'd love to hear your thoughts- do you ever blog Paris reads? You should!

nzreader- Thanks.

Violet- Good to hear. I'm not sure I'll get to it soon though.

Kath! I haven't read it of course, but find the premise for such a door stop quite small. How can there be such a fuss? The miniseries is about to start on the ABC early October. Not sure if you can watch things on iview from there? Not sure if you want to be watching Aussie shows or immersing yourself in whatever the Swiss equivalent it...

Scribacchina- That's my excuse for not trying to read Anne Frank sooner- it really will be perfect for an Amsterdam visit. Who knows? It may be next year!

Jehara- Hedgehog is supposed to be a great read. I hope your bookclub picks it.

A big yes to Lord of the Flies. Required reading before your son enters those terrible teen years. Explains a lot.

Debbie I think I'm going to have to schedule it in our 2012 reads for 1001! I think it's one I can't stand not having read any more!!
