Earth Hour 2012

Earth Hour is a wonderful concept. An idea started in Sydney in 2007, it has now spread to be a world wide phenomenon. An annual chance to spend an hour with the electricity and lights off, to remind ourselves to conserve energy for the rest of the year.

My son and I have been doing Earth Hour since it started. He really enjoys it each year- the candles being part of the novelty and part of the fun for a child.

Enjoying the candles Earth Hour 2011

This year, he wrote some poems. He doesn't usually write poems. But I think they're pretty good.

The wax burnt
by the dance of the flickering flame
but it was as if it weren't
anything more than a shame

The flames danced
without care for the world
the flames pranced
looking for a world where candles are held.

Saturday Snapshot, is a wonderful weekly meme from at home with books

That's a sweet picture and a very nice poem.

I've participated in Earth Hour every year except this one. It didn't get much press in the US and by the time I remembered, the hour had passed. :( So I'm going to do my own Earth Hour tonight.

Your son should write more poems - that's very good. I only realised about Earth Hour the next day, when my son and his family said they'd taken part!

Lyrical poem and beautifully mystical photo.

Thanks for sharing...and for reminding me of this wonderful tradition.

What a great family tradition! And poetry seems like a perfect candlelight activity -- a very creative boy.

Oh, I love the light and mood in this photo.

We did earth hour, it was nice to look out the window and see that a lot of other people were doing it too.

Thanks so much for coming and visiting me!
I have to admit we were at a family double birthday celebration in a restaurant during Earth Hour and the restaurant didn't attempt to do anything for it.

THAT is truly a photo to be treasured ... the icing on the cake is his poetry that down the line will surely be matted along with the photo! What a family treasure!

Lovely poem! I hadn't heard of Earth hour, but we manage to go without electricity at least a few times a year (usually not voluntarily though) during storms.
