My teenage son introduced me to QuizUp recently, and now I'm slightly obsessed. It's a trivia game with lots of categories, and I do play a few, but my favourite is Beginner's French. I'm making a concerted effort to improve my French lately. I was really frustrated with my attempts on my last trip to Paris last year even though I got by. I've got an excellent regular teacher now and taking lessons most weeks. It's helping a lot. It's always good to supplement formal learning with other sorts of practice though.
So I listen to French music and French radio or news. I watch French movies and sometimes get to catch the French news on SBS TV, best on weekends because the weekend news reader is dreamy. Quiz Up Begginer's French is another fun way to practice French, and learn some words.
Quiz Up is a kind of trivia/flash card game. You are matched up with another player from around the world and answer 7 questions in each round. You get points for the right answer, with more points the quicker you answer to a maximum of 160 points for a perfect round- I don't think I've achieved that ever but have got close once or twice. It's nice if your partner is a reasonable match and you can choose to play again with the same player, or move on and find someone else.
It's rather fun.
Some questions are particularly easy.
Give it a go- it's free and fun, maybe we'll have a game someday. And now if I can just stop playing 1010 (a kind of modern day tetris) then I can get back to Quiz Up.

Some are particularly hard. The conjugation questions are always tricky, especially to do quickly.
Some questions just need a bit of general knowledge or geography.
Some need a bit of guess work, and luck.

sounds cool. as French native and French tutor myself, I highly recommend Lingq.com. you pay $10/month, but it;s fantastic to learn, because you learn French vocab in context

I couldn't put down my phone when I discovered this game app but ever since I became very busy with work, I've stopped playing. Finding out now that there's Beginner's French, will surely make me addicted again. I was trying to use the app Duolingo to learn French but my progress is suupppper slow...not because of the app, but more so because of my laziness!

ReplyDeleteI'll try it! I have the Duolingo app on my phone, but that is strictly to learn French and takes a similar tact to Rosetta Stone. It's not a competition, and since I hate to lose, maybe a little competition will get me motivated. Thanks for playing along with Dreaming of France. Here’s my Dreaming of France meme

ReplyDeleteI wonder how my high school French would fare! At one time, I was fairly fluent. (My greatest compliment is having a French policemen ask me from what country I came; I knew I didn't qualify as Parisienne, but not to be identified as American was quite flattering. Not that I dislike America, we just tend to stick out in Europe. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks this one sounds like fun, I'll definitely give it a go. I used Duolingo before my last trip and I just barely got by. Next holiday in France I would like to be comfortable speaking French, fluent would be pushing it lol so lessons might be the way to go ...
