Top Ten Favourite 1001 Children's Books I've Read Before I've Grown Up (so far)

I'm an occasional Top Ten contributor. I'm not clever enough to think up a list each and every week, but occasionally a special list looms, and this week is one of those lists.

Top Ten Tuesday is a great weekly meme

A few years ago I set myself somewhat of a challenge. To read all 1001 Children's Books You Must Read Before You Grow Up. Yes, all 1001 books. That's a lot of books, even if many of them are picture books. Still, I'm over a quarter of the way through now! Time to see what my favourite of my 1001 reads have been so far.

The first six are easy. Massive standouts. Incredible books.

Beyond that it's a bit difficult. I could pick any number of books. Here are some I thought of today.

The Secret Garden
Island of the Blue Dolphins
Old Yeller
Thursday's Child
The Three Musketeers
I am Not Esther
From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs Basil E. Frankweiler

  1. I wonder if I should do this with my granddaughter, the two of us read our way through this list of books. It could be fun.

  2. Hi, I like your list :) Roald Dahl is/was one of my very favourite authors growing up and I adore The Secret Garden. I actually did a Children's Classics TTT as well: http://ofdragonsandhearts.com/2014/07/top-ten-tuesday-childrens-classics/ I haven't read all the books on your list, though I should probably give them a try :)

  3. I remember having to read "Island of the Blue Dolphin" in sixth grade and being surprised by it. I didn't think I'd like a book about a girl "and dolphins", but I have nothing but fond memories of it.

  4. Love this list. And it, of course, inspires me to think about what I'd put on my own list. I'd second BFG and Giver. I'd add The Arrival and Parvana's Journey. And then...it gets very, very hard, I think.

  7. Ah, I remember the BFG. That was beautiful Beyond that, I don't think I've read a lot of children's books. I started reading for fun when I was 16.

  8. I'm a huge fan of The Giver and always happy to see when someone loves it too, but I always get SUPER excited when someone loves The BFG as that is my favourite Roald Dahl children's book and I feel like there aren't as many people out there who know about it!
