The 25 Books Every Kid Should Have on their Bookshelf

I do love a good list. And this week I found an intriguing one- The 25 Books Every Kid Should Have on their Bookshelf at Flavorwire. Often these lists have all the same books. This one is quite different- it has a fair few that I've never actually heard of before. Intriguing.

As always the ones I've read are noted in red

The Little Prince - Antoine de Saint-Expury

Where the Wild Things Are - Maurice Sendak

The Pushcart War - Jean Merrill

The Sweetest Fig - Chris van Allsburg

Ooh it's set in Paris!
Shhh, I might have just ordered it online

Matilda - Roald Dahl

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - Mark Twain

Dealing with Dragons - Patricia C. Wrede

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland - Lewis Carroll

Wizard of Earthsea - Ursula K. LeGuin

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz - L. Frank Baum

Harriet the Spy - Louise Fitzhugh (see my review)

It's in the house, I should read it.

Half Magic - Edward Eager

Peter Pan and Wendy - J.M. Barrie

A Wrinkle in Time - Madeleine L'Engle (see my review)

The Wind in the Willows - Kenneth Grahame (see my review)

Madeline - Ludwig Bemelmans

Where the Sidewalk Ends - Shel Silverstein

The Phantom Tollbooth - Norton Juster

The Giver - Lois Lowry (see my gushing review)

The House at Pooh Corner - A.A. Milne

The Story of Ferdinand - Munro Leaf

Charlotte's Web - E.B. White

Lizard Music - D. Manus Pinkwater

I Capture the Castle - Dodie Smith

Oh, the Places You'll Go- Dr Seuss

15/25

Not bad. But I do believe the TBR just got even bigger.

  1. I really think you should make your own list. Maybe an oz one and an international one. What do ounthink?

Like you there are a couple of books on there I have never heard of, and really don't know how I Capture the Castle qualifies. I would call it young adult fiction. See the movie, it is just as good as the book though neither will thrill teenage boys! Huck Finn, we did as a talking book on a holiday. It went on forever, but has its moments.

  3. Thanks for your confidence in me Megan. It would be an interesting process to make a list. But I don't feel well read enough in the area yet though. I'm sure I will make a list at some stage. I Capture the Castle is definitely on my TBR. I haven't even read Huck Finn....

  4. What a great list, Louise...thanks for sharing it with us. I just read the entire Giver quartet last year and I loved it. I'm trying to read a lot of the books that I missed for some reason. I remember finding The Phantom Tollbooth at a thrift store or Goodwill. I had forgotten that I have it. Now if I could only find it! Again, thanks for the list!

  6. For the most part I agree with the books on the list (there are a few I haven't read). Most of the books have been around since I was a kid, or before, though. I'm surprised there aren't more recent additions.
