Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular

Last weekend we took a rather long day trip to go to the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular at Sydney Opera House. My son is a fevered Doctor Who fan, a process accidentally set in train when we watched the Christmas Special in 2010. Since then he's seen every modern episode (many, many times), and become rather a world expert on Doctor Who. What could be better than tickets to the live Spectacular for his birthday this month?

We didn't know it at the time, but that reflective dish outside the Museum of Contemporary Art is part of Anish Kapoor's new exhibition. Sky Mirror required optics specialists to make sure that the general public weren't blinded.

I have never seen so many adults wearing Dr Who t-shirts.

But it wasn't jsut tshirts they were wearing!

The Cybermen were a really freaky presence
even though you knew they weren't really cybermen...

Mr Wicker was very pleased to be
in the presence of Alex Kingston

The Daleks had to invade!

One of my favourite parts

The Silence were spooky too
I hadn't noticed their creepy 4 fingered hands before

It was a fun event, and a lovely day. Master Wicker loved it.

  1. How fun! I bet your son had a great time and something he'll remember for years. I went to a Dr. Who Convention ages ago, back when everyone was wearing the long Tom Baker scarves. It was quite an experience.

  3. My hubby is 71 and is still a Dr. Who fan and still has a Dr. Who T-shirt. Your son has many years ahead of him to enjoy this phenomenon. Glad you had such a good time!

  5. Oh, I'm so jealous! Should I admit to how much Doctor Who paraphernalia we have in our house? :) We would love to go to one of those concerts someday. We're eagerly awaiting this year's Christmas special with the new companion.

  6. My daughter loves Dr. Who too. We have parking garage barriers that look like the daleks. No one around here looks like Silence though. Fun times. Here's Mine

  9. I am probably the only person who has no clue who "DR. Who" is :)

  10. I hear people talking about Dr. Who all the time but I don't really know who he is either. Sounds like you had fun, though!

  11. I wish I could get into Dr. Who! I've seen a few episodes on BBC America but I'm not sure which Dr. Who came first. I guess I need a Dr. Who primer. I love the BBC America channel, btw, I've been watching the Hour on it. And of course Chef Gordon Ramsay.
Anyhoo, thanks to your pictures it's clear that the concert was very very special.

  12. I had heard of Dr.Who before but never got curious about him! Recently, at a recital at my son's music school, one amazingly talented kid (my son is talented too, but am not talking about him here!) played 'I am the Doctor' from Dr.Who and we were hooked, on the music..and we have been listening to this particular one many times now.

  13. Happy Birthday to your son. My son is a relatively recent Dr. Who convert. (In fact my husband is watching an episode with him right now.) The symphony looks like fun!

  15. I know absolutely nothing about Dr. Who. Isn't that odd? Especially from a person who was a Star Trek geek from the day the show aired.
