Yesterday was National Bookshop Day, an initiative that started in 2011 to help our ailing bookshops survive in the modern ebook world. Thanks to Lisa at ANZ Litlovers for reminding me to go, and spurring me on to do a post.
I popped in to my local bookshop, and bought a few things. I went to buy one book, but in the way of good readers everywhere came out with more.
I went to buy The Cartographer.
Which will be my Melbourne read for my upcoming trip. I'm very excited about it.
Then I found the new range of Vintage Childrens Classics. I was very good and only bought one.
I bought two books for my son.
Now to get the time to read some of them....
Good on you Louise. I have been drafting mine too ... but as a Monday Musings as it seems like a worthy topic to write on. Love your haul.
ReplyDeleteI'll look forward to your post tomorrow then Sue. It certainly is a worthy topic.
ReplyDeleteI was wowed by my visit to Houston's beautiful Blue Willow Bookshop on Friday with four of my fellow librarians. Nothing like talking books with book people at a bookstore.
ReplyDeleteSo very true Deb. That sounds like a nice excursion.
ReplyDeleteLouise completely by luck and without knowing it was National Bookshop Day in Australia, we visited the Foreign Languages Bookstore on Fuzhou Lu in Shanghai on Saturday and stocked up for the next leg of our trip - I'm trying to read 'Journey to the West' - the classic Chinese tale of bringing Buddhist scriptures back from India to China (better known to us as the TV series 'Monkey'), and the kids chose seven books each - knowing we'll be entering an English-book-free zone for the next four months on our next leg westwards.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry we weren't more able to directly support an Aussie bookstore!
Glad to hear that you lucked out with timing. How great to have a foreign language bookstore and that you and the kids were able to stock up. Can't wait to see where these adventures take you. (Monkey was never my thing, I missed it as a kid).

ReplyDeleteAll the books look so enticing. I esp. like the first one. Its cover, and the title. Looks like a graphic novel, or is it? The 30 sec. Mythology sounds great too... mmm I'll read that over Math anytime. ;) And, o, all the book covers are so interesting. You've celebrated National Bookshop Day very well. Wish we can have something like that in Canada.
ReplyDeleteThe Cartographer does have a fantastic cover, doesn't it? It's a novel, set in Melbourne in 1959 about a boy who accidentally witnesses a murder. I don't know much else about it. I read a newspaper review a few months ago and knew that I would have to read it. Hopefully Canada will get a National Bookshop Day soon, the whole world needs a National Bookshop Day...
