Adelaide Central Market

I only had a free half day in Adelaide on my recent trip. I knew that one of the things I wanted to see was the famous Adelaide Central Market. And so I thought that I should head there for breakfast.



I knew I was getting close when I found a fabulous shop called Goodies and Grains.


And then bam I was in the market proper. 

Kangaroo meat is very delicious, but for some reason I rarely cook with it at home

Perhaps if I lived in Adelaide I'd think of it more often?


Sadly I didn't get to buy this for breakfast
 Everything was displayed to look fabulous

Or any of this
I knew I'd found some breakfast when I found this place. Yoghurt never looked so appealing!

Although honeycomb strewn with chocolate seemed slightly OTT for brekkie

The much more modest mango and raspberry with optional Anzac crumble!

You can't put Aussies off by calling something smelly it seems

Ah, almond croissants are perfect for second breakfast.

My favourite variety of pumpkin, called Jap or Kent here

Actually I could eat heaps more than kangaroo if I lived in Adelaide

Crocodile burgers anyone?
 There were so many varieties of food, this place had an intriguing menu, but it wasn't time for lunch yet, I had much more walking to do.

    I loved browsing all these market photos -- lots of wild game choices -- that surprised me. I couldn't stop thinking about the poor kangaroos...LOL

    LOve browwsing the markets ... it's always interesting to me the different food choices all around the world! Lots of wild game options in Adelaide! Who knew ???

    What great shots of the market! I have eaten many things and many types of meat, but I do not think that I have ever had either kangaroo or emu. Do they taste like chicken? (an American joke)

    That's a busy Market. Carry a big basket and try the wild. It'll be an experience to eat kangaroo meat or crocodile tail.

    What an amazing marke, and how beautifully the food is displayed - I'm not sure I could cope with kangaroo meat and such like (but I don't eat meat anyway).     What a fabulous-looking market. Although--I'm not sure I could do Kangaroo meat. I've had crocodile before (although I don't know if it was tail meat..."crocodile puffs").

    P.S. Skippy is delicious! and the most sustainable of all the meat crops.

    P.P.S. Fun fact of the day - JAP (I think it's from Qld) was named because it is an abbreviation for "Just Another Pumpkin". People thought it was a racist name (when it really isn't!) so then it got the name Kent too. Ah, the things you learn from Ready Steady Cook.

    This is the first time I ever considered that people eat kangaroo meat. Somehow it just doesn't seem right to me, and yet -- carnivore that I am -- I'm sure I wouldn't pass up a kangaroo burger or whatever.
    Or one of those sausages!
    These are terrific pics of a land I long to one day visit.

    I didn't realise that kangaroo meat would be so confronting for so many people! It is a really nice meat. Very lean. Definitely a red meat on appearance and taste- and no Genie it doesn't taste like chicken! It has it's own taste more like beef than lamb I suppose, but not really like either if that makes any sense. I'd like to try and cook some at home this week now, I wonder how my 11 year old would react? I think I'd tell him it was lamb.

    I think it's really funny that a couple of people commented on the coffee shop in the last photo. I don't drink coffee and had completely ignored that on the sign! For me the fascinating part was the Eurasian food/piroshki!

    Hope you get there Dee. Of course there were lots more amazing stuff that I didn't photograph. It would be so great to be staying somewhere where you could cook something.

    Hi Anna, Thanks for your lovely comment. I can't remember exactly where that panel with the history of the market is. I know I did enter after going past Goodies and Grains, and it was on the way in to the general market. I remember it being on the right hand side of an entrance door. I hope you can find it.
