Versailles

I finished a book on Marie Antoinette this week. It was quite fascinating. And I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed writing a blog post about it. I used some of my photos from my visit to Versailles in 2010 for the post. The photos got me looking through my Paris photos again, which always makes me a bit unsettled. So I thought I would put up some more Versailles photos for my Saturday Snapshot(s). 


A visit to Versailles is always special

    Beautiful! I watched a TV documentary this week set in Versailles about the last days of Louis XIV's reign. I went there many years ago and sadly no longer have my photos.

    The buildings are beautiful. I'm in awe just looking at the photos. I can only imagine what it was like in person.

    The architecture and art is really quite astonishing. I was there last spring and was absolutely speechless with the size and beauty of the louvre. We never did make it to Versailles though. That'll be for next time ;)

    We visited twenty years ago, but never made it inside because the lines were so long. It looks beautiful. From what I remember the gardens were very lovely too.

    Beautiful! I really love the shots showing the ceiling and windows. I'm a big fan of stained glass windows.

    Those soaring columns, the gilding and archways are spectacular. And, the pipe organ is simply breathtaking.

    The third photo, it's like an optical illusion. I had to look again to see if the balcony went inwards or out.

    Versailles is beautiful! The last time I visited, much of the building was undergoing some painting and renovation, so it wasn't quite so splendid.

    Hard to imagine living amongst all that luxury and gilt paint.

    It's an incredible place, but when I visited there in 1991, I couldn't help but look at all the ornamentation and grandeur and think, "Yep, if I were a starving peasant, I'd be cheering them using the guillotine too."
